Last night Barney Smith from Marion spoke at the Democratic National Convention.
Key quote from his speech: “You need a president who puts Barney Smith before Smith Barney.” And the crowd goes wild…
I [heart] Marion: Sonic Opens!
Yesterday was a big day for Marion – our new Sonic restaurant opened.
In Atlanta we lived about a mile from a Sonic, so this feels a bit like our life in Atlanta invading our life in Marion. Reminds me of the Kingdom of God – where heaven invades earth.
Anyway, the kids were really excited. We had opening day dinner at Sonic, including cheeseburgers, corn dogs, french fries, onion rings, cherry lime aid, coconut cream pie shakes, and police officers directing traffic in the parking lot.
From the Marion Chronicle-Tribune:
Area residents got their first taste of Sonic Drive-In’s new Marion restaurant as the facility officially opened Monday.
Bill Frizzell, director of operations of Georgia-based Highland Foods, which is the franchisee for the Marion Sonic, is anticipating at least as big of an opening as the Lafayette Sonic, which Frizzell said was the fourth-biggest opening in Sonic’s history.
“It’ll definitely be a grand slam,” Frizzell said.
Oh yeah, the new YMCA opened yesterday too.
I [heart] Marion: Headlines
I check the Marion Chronicle-Tribune headlines every morning via rss feed.
Today these headlines popped up, in this exact order.
Batman earns award in essay contest
Clown classes offered
DUI blitz starts Friday
Perhaps I have a strange sense of humor, but I found this to be quite funny.
I [heart] Marion: Order a pizza, get $10,000
From Marion Chronicle-Tribune:
It’s not every day that a Domino’s Pizza customer opens up their pizza box and finds a $10,000 check in the box with their food. That’s exactly what happened to Kasey Quick on Friday.
The Marion resident was one of 20 people throughout the United States who won the money. Brian Coles from Coles Marketing, the group that manages marketing for Domino’s Pizza, said Quick was the only resident in Indiana to win the prize.
According to a news release, Domino’s Pizza customers had the chance to win $10,000 from July 7 to July 27 when they ordered a Gotham City Pizza. The large, hand-tossed pizza came with one and half times the amount of pepperoni than a standard order for $9.99, and it was delivered in a specially designed Gotham City pizza box, part of a promotion for the blockbuster film The Dark Knight.
Coles said the drawing to win the money was random. Quick opened her pizza after it was delivered Friday and found play money inside the box, Coles said. Later that day, the real check arrived.
“I was shocked,” Quick said in a news release. “I couldn’t believe that I had won $10,000, let alone the fact that Domino’s had delivered the check to my door the same time my pizza was delivered. Now I will be able to afford the trip to my family reunion. I will probably also pay my entire family’s way, as well.”
I [heart] Marion: You Can Walk to the Ice Cream Shop
I thought I would start an ongoing series of reasons I like living in Marion, IN.
Yesterday was a gorgeous day, so we decided to walk with the kids to Gus’s Dari-Bar. Along the way, Alison said, “We’ve never walked to the ice cream place before!”
So, reason #1 I [heart] Marion: You can walk to the ice cream shop.
Hanging with Barack
This morning I attended the Barack Obama Town Hall Meeting at Marion High School. It was the first time that a presidential candidate has visited Marion since ——- Bobby Kennedy!
If this pattern follows, my kids will be 10 years older than I am now the next time a candidate stops by.
Senator Obama was gracious, well spoken, and thought provoking. I was especially impressed by his answers to audience questions. He gave thoughtful and lengthy responses to questions without notes. This is not always easy to pull off.
