Free Book Friday: When Helping Hurts

Free Book Friday: When Helping Hurts

This week we share a free audio book.

When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor . . . and Yourself
by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert

When Helping Hurts

With more than 225,000 copies sold, When Helping Hurts is a paradigm-forming contemporary classic on the subject of poverty alleviation and ministry to those in need. Emphasizing the poverty of both heart and society, this book exposes the need that every person has and how it can be filled. The reader is brought to understand that poverty is much more than simply a lack of financial or material resources and that it takes much more than donations and handouts to solve the problem of poverty.

While this book exposes past and current development efforts that churches have engaged in which unintentionally undermine the people they’re trying to help, its central point is to provide proven strategies that challenge Christians to help the poor empower themselves. Focusing on both North American and Majority World contexts, When Helping Hurts catalyzes the idea that sustainable change for people living in poverty comes not from the outside-in, but from the inside-out.

Free Book Friday: Christian Classics

In an Introduction to On the Incarnation by Athanasius, CS Lewis makes the case for reading old books. I recommend you read this excellent essay in its entirety. Lewis writes,

It is a good rule, after reading a new book, never to allow yourself another new one till you have read an old one in between. If that is too much for you, you should at least read one old one to every three new ones.

Remembering Lewis’ call to read old books, here are 7 free or $.99 Christian Classics everyone should read.

Free Book Friday: Get Some Margin

Pat Hannon @phannon January 17, 2014 3 Comments

Free Book Friday: Get Some Margin

This week in Free Book Friday we have two offers that will help you get some margin in your life.

24:6

First, the fabulous book 24/6: A Prescription for a Healthier, Happier Life by Matthew Sleeth is offered as a free ebook.  I paid full price for this book and it was well worth it. Get it now for free while you still can!

From the back cover of 24/6:

“Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.” It’s the only commandment that begins with the word remember—almost as if God knew we would forget. Well, guess what? We did. And is it any wonder? Look around. Thanks to ever-improving technology, we now feel the pressure to be “on” twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Sure, things like smart phones, the Internet, Facebook, Twitter, and Skype help us stay connected with coworkers, family, and friends—but what about God? How can we possibly have “ears to hear” when we are plugged in 24/7? If we never take time to “be still and know” God, how can we grow into mature spiritual beings? The solution is simple. And it is endorsed by the Great Physician himself. In fact, he invented it. It’s called rest. And like all good things, rest is a gift from God. Rest doesn’t just happen. It takes intentionality, commitment, and restraint. Yet the rewards are indescribably amazing. In 24/6, Dr. Matthew Sleeth provides a life-giving prescription for a healthier, more God-centered life amidst a digitally crazed, always-on world and helps us better understand how our lives can be radically transformed—physically, emotionally, relationally, and spiritually—by adopting a 24/6 lifestyle.

Margin

Second, I have a print copy of Margin: Restoring Emotional, Physical, Financial, and Time Reserves to Overloaded Lives by Richard Swenson to give away. In this book, Dr. Swenson helps us find some much-needed margin in our overloaded lives.

From the back cover:

Overload is not having time to finish the book you’re reading on stress. Margin is having time to read it twice. Overload is fatigue. Margin is energy. Overload is red ink. Margin is black ink. Overload is hurry. Margin is calm. Overload is anxiety. Margin is security. Overload is the disease of the 90’s. Margin is the cure. Margin is the space that once existed between ourselves and our limits. It’s something held in reserve for contingencies or unanticipated situations. Dr. Swenson provides a prescription against the danger of overloaded lives. Focusing on margin in four key areas-emotional energy, physical energy, time, and finances-he offers an overall picture of health that employs contentment, simplicity, balance, and rest.

Enter to win a copy of Margin. Leave a comment below telling why you need margin in your life. Then enter the giveaway via the form in this post. One winner will be announced in next week’s Free Book Friday post.

Free Book Friday: Bibles

Free Book Friday: Bibles

Let’s talk Bibles for this edition of Free Book Friday.
It’s early in the new year, and  many have resolved to read the Bible more this year.

We may be living in the golden age of Bible availability, and free Bibles, while Bible reading itself continues to decline.
Here’s some great free Bibles to help you in your Bible reading.

YouVersion
YouVersion
YouVersion offers a tremendous free Bible app for your smartphone and tablet. You can also read online at bible.com.
It offers hundreds of Bible translations, absolutely free (& ad free), as well as many good Bible reading plans.
Carry the word of God in your pocket all the time.
If you don’t have this installed on your phone and tablet, go get it now. Seriously.

BibleGateway
BibleGateway
My online Bible of choice for use on the computer. BibleGateway offers over 100 translations free. It is great for searching the Bible and quickly comparing different translations.

Blue Letter Bible
Blue Letter Bible
Need to do some serious word study on a passage? Blue Letter Bible has tremendous Hebrew and Greek tools. It’s easy to study the original languages of the texts, even with limited knowledge of Hebrew and Greek. This resource is so good you probably don’t need to buy one of those fancy $300 Bible software programs.

Free Bibles for your Kindle
There are many good Bible translations available free for your Kindle, or Kindle app on your phone and tablet. The free translations include the ESV and HCSB. The KJV is available for $.99. My current translations of choice, the NIV and CEB are not free, but can be purchased for a few dollars. Watch for deals on the NIV Study Bible. Regularly priced at over $20 for the Kindle version, it often goes on sale for less than $5 at strategic times, like New Years and Holy Week.

Printed Bibles
It’s great to have free Bibles available. I love having the Bible on my cell phone when I need it. Searching the Bible electronically is better than with the old school concordance. Yet, having a good printed Bible can’t be beat for distraction free focus on God’s word. Here a few great printed Bibles I’ve recently discovered. While not free, they are worth your investment.

Women’s Sanctuary Devotional Bible
I recently discovered this Bible. This is a beautifully designed NLT Bible, featuring highlights of verses about God’s presence and peace in our lives. I wish it was simply called the Sanctuary Bible, because I want one.

The CEB Study Bible
This is great new Study Bible featuring full color pictures and maps. The Study Notes are informed by the best of modern scholarship while seeking to grow the reader in faith. Dr. Ken Schenck, Wesleyan Bible scholar and Dean of Wesley Seminary wrote the study notes for the book of Hebrews.

CEB Bible for Daily Prayer
My current Bible for devotional reading. It’s a handsomely packaged version of the CEB text paired with helps for engaging prayer practices as you read. There are great insets on “Praying the Psalms” and “Praying with Jesus,” as well as a Bible reading plan and a helpful guide for practicing traditional prayer practices.

Do you have a Bible recommendation to offer?

Free Book Friday: John Wesley

Free Book Friday: John Wesley

275 years ago today, On May 24, 1738, John Wesley had his Aldersgate Experience.  Wesley was at a Bible study on Aldersgate Street, listening to a reading from the preface to Martin Luther’s Commentary on Romans. During this reading Wesley felt his heart “strangely warmed” as he “did trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation.”

John Wesley

The life and ministry of John Wesley that followed had an incalculable effect on the  world as we know it. In short, Wesley was truly a world changer.

In honor of the 275th anniversary of Wesley’s Aldersgate Experience, for Free Book Friday I point you to some of Wesley’s most important writings. For free, of course.

You can find many of John Wesley’s most important works online at The Wesley Center. I especially recommend:

  • A Plain Account of Christian Perfection
  • The Journal of John Wesley
  • The Sermons of John Wesley

Do you have a favorite writing of Wesley? Let us know about it in the comments.

The Inaugural Free Book Friday

The Inaugural Free Book Friday

We love books.
We love free.
We love Friday.
Let’s combine the things we love into FREE BOOK FRIDAY!

I’m starting a new post series. On Friday each week I’ll share one good free book you can get around the interwebs.
What do you think? Are you interested?

The First Free Book

Emotionally Healthy Spirituality by Peter Scazzero has been one of the most helpful books to my spiritual growth I’ve read over the last 10 years. I recommend it often and have given away many copies. Scazzero shares his journey from ministry burnout to emotional and spiritual health. Scazzero argues that the practices of emotional health combined with the classic spiritual disciplines provide the path for us to grow into healthy, mature followers of Christ. It’s like Henry Cloud meets Richard Foster. Life changing stuff!

The Emotionally Healthy Church PlanterI was excited to discover that Exponential is giving away The Emotionally Healthy Church Planter by Scazzero. This book shares much of the same material as Emotionally Healthy Spirituality. It is packaged for church planters, but is helpful for any Christ follower seeking a pathway for deeply rooting your work for Jesus in the rich soil of a life with Jesus.

Download your free copy here : The Emotionally Healthy Church Planter at exponential.org.
